Leadership and Community Safety: A Call for Action
In today's world, leadership stands at the forefront of the world's biggest organizations, governance structures, and movements. During a problem-solving session, a wise mentor once told me, "A fish stinks from the head all the way down to the tail." This phrase has stuck with me, highlighting the critical role leadership plays in shaping outcomes, whether positive or negative.

Addressing Societal Issues Through Leadership
In a society where children now have more rights and certain forms of punishment, such as corporal punishment, are no longer acceptable, we face new challenges. When a potato rots and is about to spoil the entire bag, who do we blame? Today, we witness schoolchildren carrying knives, posing a threat not only to their peers but also to teachers. What does this say about the safety and respect within our educational institutions? Are we heading towards a future where a student could command a teacher to sit down and listen?
Of course, corporal punishment has its downsides. An angry elder could wrongfully punish an innocent child and later apologize. Some adults were more abusive than disciplined. However, these reflections lead me to ponder how we can raise a generation that is progressive rather than disruptive.
Economic Disparity and Its Consequences
Our beloved country is developing, but only in certain areas. Most regions where the majority live continue to decay year by year. New data released by Statistics South Africa shows that household crimes experienced in the twelve months preceding the interview have increased compared to 2020/21, with the exception of theft of motor vehicles, which decreased. Individual experiences of crime have also increased, except for street robbery, which dropped in 2021/22.
According to the Governance, Public Safety, and Justice Survey (GPSJS) 2021/22, the percentage of adults aged 16 years and older who felt safe walking alone in their neighbourhoods during the day decreased from 84.8% in 2020/21 to 81.3% in 2021/22. Personally, I no longer feel safe walking during the day. For the longest time, I believed I could uplift society through youth-oriented programs. I have raised funds provided sanitary pads for scholars in need and worked alongside municipalities to combat teenage pregnancy. Despite these efforts, the threat of violence looms large.
The Grim Reality
One day, I could be shot or stabbed and left to die like a dog in the streets. Is this what freedom really is? As we navigate these complex realities, it is imperative to ask hard questions about leadership, governance, and economic policies.
